Misconceptions about Basketball Part 1
Okays, so this is going to be something of an essay on the common misconceptions of basketball. Today's topic is going to be on rating how good a player is.
For starters, let's compare the old Kobe (let's just call him KB8, since 8 is his old jersey number), and Jason Kidd. If you give me these two players, I will most likely pick Kidd, because he is a playmaker, a team player. On the other hand, we have KB8, one who is selfish, one who doesn't trust his team mates and one who disrupts the whole team concept. KB8 has much better stats than Kidd, but that does not mean KB8 is better. Point 1: Stats does not spell how good a player is.
Kidd is making a hell of good decisions on every games he has played, on the other hand KB8 is forcing lots of shots, making lots of bad decisions. But can we judge all those good decisions? Many inexperienced players or players who do not really understand the game will think that just putting the ball into the basket is the point of the game. Really, it is not. Basketball is a game created for a team, and therefore we should play like a team. I can't stress this enough, so I have to put this down. Point 2: Scoring is not everything.
Sure, scoring is the eventual part, but have you heard this phrase "Offense wins games, defense wins championships."? This line was once again proven true by the Boston Celtics, which had great defense and limited the Lakers.
